Dr. Amit Telang joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2005. After graduating from Government Medical College, Nagpur, he completed his M.D from the same institution in 2003. He served as a Lecturer before joining the Indian Foreign Service in 2005. He has also served as a Medical Officer in a remote tribal district in Maharashtra that provided him some first-hand experience of different tribes in Central India and an insight into their rich traditions, customs, and culture. After joining foreign service, he worked briefly in the External Publicity Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, dealing with international media liaisons and managing high-level visits. He was posted to Embassy of India, Berlin in 2007 and served there till 2012 as the Head of the Political Wing. During this period, he assisted in launching the India-Germany Inter-governmental Commission, opening a new chapter in Indo-German strategic partnership. He returned to India in 2012 to serve in the Human Resource Department of the Ministry and was part of the team that organized the 4th BRICS Summit in New Delhi and the 9th World Hindi Conference in Johannesburg. In 2014, he was posted as the Head of Economic & Commercial Wing in the Embassy of India, Moscow. During this period, India and Russia finalized some major bilateral investment projects, especially in the Oil & Gas sector and the strengthening of cooperation in transport, IT, customs, space, and vocational education. In 2017, he returned to India and after briefly serving as the Deputy Head of the External Publicity and Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, he was assigned the responsibility to serve as Director of the East Asia Division of the Ministry that deals with India’s relations with China, Japan, Mongolia, and the Koreas. In this new role, he was closely associated with India-China boundary negotiations.
